Contemporary abstract art by

Jörg Engelbrecht

In my paintings I reconstruct aspects of natural forms and textures. My intention is to bring the viewer into a world that they are familiar with and feel comfortable with. I would like the viewer to connect subconsciously, to get drawn into discovering the paintings aspects and to be enriched by the formal beauty of the abstract form.

Title: "Can you measure Nature" 1700x1030mm, acrylic, ink, mixed media, resin on plywood board (in situ) SOLD.

My interest in architecture is reflected in my artwork. I include the interplay of geometrical lines with natural patterns. I'm fascinated by the phenomena of the Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci numbers which play a significant role in nature and architecture, and I follow these principles of design to create aesthetic value. The title of this particular painting refers to the facts around the Golden Ratio. 137° is the exact angle plants like the agave, sunflower, pinecones and many others grow their leaves or seeds so that every leave is covered least possible by the next in order to absorb maximum sunshine. Buildings like Roman and Greek temples were designed according to the Golden Ratio and artists like Leonardo Da Vinci used the codes to achieve pleasing proportions in their paintings. These same proportions repeat naturally in any human faces both female and male.

I use specific techniques to create depth with multiple layers, starting with a textured base that can include distressed fabric, paper and paint mediums. I often remove parts of painted layers to bring underlying layers partially to the foreground.

I often finish my paintings with an art resin which gives my paintings added depth and a glass like finish that increases the vibrancy of the highly pigmented acrylics and protects the painting from UV light.
